I really liked this one!! Stephen King has never let me down and he delivered yet again.1408 definitely had some pretty scary moments in it,and at this point I really dont get "scared" anymore ,this was done really well, nice twist endng all in all a great watch,Check it out,let me know what you think.
I think I will never really become friends with Stephen King's storytelling: In a way I feel that he usually sacrifices too much logic and sense for impacting shock moments which are usually quite impacting indeed. But I cannot enjoy a movie as a whole whenever I can't really relate to the story that's being told. This particular movie had an excellent setting I feel, and I was expecting a really good movie. The first shock moments came off very effective and it's worth a mention that some of them I had never seen before. Later, there was an visual highlight, my favorite part, when Mike hits into the painting... which gives place to an interesting twist that is later 'undone' in a truly nightmarish scenario. This is where the movie turns confusing. Not exactly confusing, but strangely pointless. Whatever, the more I think about it, the more I feel it's probably worth a watch for you too. Have your own opinion (and share it with me.)
1408 is a simple enough story - A cynical writer of the paranormal Mike Enslin (John Cusack), travels around America looking for hotels to stay in that supposedly are haunted hoping to get his own personal ghost story to tell, or rather, debunk them. We meet him at a point in his life when he has decided that ghost simply don't exist. Enter his discovery of the Dolphin Hotel and it's infamous room, no. 1408, where fifty six people have mysteriously died. Enslin forces the stern Hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson) to let him stay in the room through a legal loop hole despite being warned that no one has lasted more than an hour.
One of the most enjoyable things about 1408 is that even though the concept is not that original (comparisons to Stanley Kubrick's superior The Shining cannot be ignored. Ironic then, that both stories came from the pen of Stephen King), it's refreshing to see a horror film come out of Hollywood that doesn't involved torture or gore FX to shock. 1408 is therefore more in the psychological thriller camp, and John Cusack was a nice choice to portray Enslin who slowly becomes more and more disturbed by what he's seeing in the dreaded number 1408. He fits into a genre film well (as he did in the excellent Identity), and even though I don't think you're supposed to feel a certain way towards Enslin, Cusack is able to elicit sympathy when at breaking point despite being a fairly unlike able fellow.
Though it becomes a little hard to make sense of at times, director Mikael Hafstrom smartly introduces the scares subtly as the hour begins, making sure that by the time the clock reaches zero, Enslin's descent into madness is almost complete without revealing it's best cards beforehand, including several elements about Enslin's daughter. The effects are good, but for me some of the most disturbing imagery was when the supernatural wasn't so obviously involved - Enslin trying to signal someone across the road in another hotel for example, using a UV light to see the blood stains of previous murder victims and the creepy female telephone operator who has some of the most memorable lines.
The ending is left ambiguous to a point with a moment toward the very end that can potentially flip the whole theory on it's head. A solid thriller that doesn't offer anything really new to the haunted house mythos, making it a perfect if forgettable midnight movie that does provide a few actually scary moments - which is pretty rare these days. Definitely recommended for fans of such films as Session 9 and Dead Birds - 1408 delivers where so many stalk-n-slash efforts have failed recently. Refreshing and worth watching if not entirely essential.
It was an awesome film. It was definately something I should not have watched all alone, late at night.
it a bit wierd at the start, but if you follow the sotry and understand the depth of it, you'll find it a good movie, not just for the halloweens!
i thought it was a good movie because stephen king is my favorite author/writer..at first i so excited bcoz its like it wud keep thinking what's in that room..but the ending is very disappointing..it is...
First real movie I have seen in awhile. Not all about the SFX or the unrealistic storyline. A truely watchable flick that makes and delivers no promises. One to watch if you can appreicate a good movie. Not for for those looking for cheap thrills, but for true movie buffs.
I thought it would be better, but it was the biggest disappointment I have ever saw. The beginning gets you all excited then when you start to see the horror part you are like thats it, please. To me, it was a waste of money. I say little kids about 2 or 3 can watch this movie. It should be rated G. I like horror where it scares you to death.
I love this movie!!!!
Its not that scary, but still keeps your eyes on the screen
Finally a good movie! There's a good storyline and the tension is at the right level. You can feel it if something is going to happen, but you don't jump a mile off your seat. It has a good ending, which confirms that everything that happened in that room was real.
P.S.: I've read some posts saying John Cusack died, but that's not true...try watching the movie better next time.
i like the film because it's an stephen king adaptation.....its scary..just cant imagine if i was on enslin's place............im just dissapointed with the sound effects...its sucks.........its an horror movie...but it sounds like its an action film..don't u think guys(whoever reading this )......?????????????
i loved it but its needs to be alittle more scary dont you think
