I love movies that are based somewhat on real life people and events. I'm sure there is quite a bit of artistic license, but this is Hollywood after all.

I've been avoiding this movie like a very uninteresting looking plague since it surfaced in 2000. Sure, I know it's from Cameron Crowe. The creator of the greatest stand-outside-your-window-with-a-boom-box-to-declare-my-love-for-you scene in the history of cinema. But that just wasn't enough to float my boat. In fact, my boat reacted to the thought of this movie the way the Titanic reacted to icebergs. But there were a couple things I hadn't reckoned. #1 - I wasn't expecting this to be the comedy it was. And #2 - I wasn't expecting the cornucopia of famous faces in this film. It's not just star-studded. It's star-bejeweled. We all know Kate Hudson is in it. Her face is on the cover. But we've also got Jason Lee, Anna Paquin, Fairuza Balk, Rainn Wilson, Zooey Deschanel, and the great Jimmy Fallon. But star accessories aside, the thing that struck me the most was how much heart this movie has. It made me nostalgic about life experiences that I never even had. It went much farther than it was obligated to. It filled it's quota of "good movie quota stuff" and then just kept going and going, giving us far more than we all deserve. This is the way all movies ought to be made. I'm fairly certain I'll be singing Tiny Dancer in my car tomorrow.

One of the most memorable flicks I've seen. I can watch it over and over again but not get bored. I love the era, I love the music.. Liberalism at its most artistic stage. Rock music for the sake of music itself.

Loved this film, it was so great and funny. It made me so nostalgic for a time I never lived in but wished I had. I loved Kate Hudson in this one. I also loved Patrick Fugit. Oh! And I also loved the music, that was by far the best part.

"Jerry Maguire" not withstanding, this is Cameron Crowe's masterpiece. A wonderful tale of a child prodigy journalist thrust into a world for which he is much too young, and yet he ends up not only surviving it, but influencing it. Crowe's script, based on his own experiences, is without question worthy of the Oscar it won. It's almost a shame that Kate Hudson gives the performance of her career here, at the beginning of her career, as I doubt she'll ever top this role. Such a wonderful movie.

Almost Famous is a movie I have great reverence for. It is one of those movies that I can watch again and again, and find something new to love each time.
Whether it's the dream of writing for Rolling Stone, meeting a rock band, or just getting out to explore life; everyone can find something to adore about this movie.
Since Say Anything is my all time favorite movie, I am partial to the styles of Cameron Crowe. He really hit beyond the ball park, with this one. The story is captivating.
The casting of this movie was genius. Frances McDormand is fabulous as Elaine Miller! She's the classic over bearing mother that everyone loves to hate. Kate Hudson was enchanting as Penny. She made you fall in love with "the love of rock ' n ' roll" all over again. Billy Crudup and Jason Lee made Still Water a groovy sensation. Zooey Deschanel is one of my favorite actresses. She showed a great side to the love/hate relationship of siblings, as Anita. Patrick Fugit really did make people fall in love with a boy named William Miller. His story made me laugh and cry. This movie is chalked full of a famous supporting cast. It is brilliant throughout.
This movie gets tons of bonus points, for the famous sing along on the bus scene. I don't care if you're not an Elton John fan, you have to appreciate that one. "Tiny Dancer" is a great song that everyone I'm sure has sung in the shower, or another place, at one point and time. I know I have. If you haven't, you should live a little. I doubt even the rubber ducky would mind!

Excellent soundtrack. Of all the movies I've seen, this is probably the one with the best music!
The story is genuine and interesting, the characters are attaching, and the film in its entirety is just... awesome!

If you're into 70s rock, you just HAVE to see this. And if you're not, then it's time you got accustomed to the genre!

Lester Bangs: So, you're the one who's been sending me those articles from your school newspaper.
William Miller: I've been doing some stuff for a local underground paper, too.
Lester Bangs: What, are you like the star of your school?
    William Miller: They hate me.
Lester Bangs: You'll meet them all again on their long journey to the middle.

A wonderful film about a young man, with desires to be a rock journalist, getting the chance of a lifetime to go on tour with a band on the verge of breaking out, so he can write an article for Rolling Stone magazine.

Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, who based the story of this film off his own personal experience as a young Rock Journalist back in the 70s himself, this is a great movie, featuring a wonderful cast and an amazing soundtrack.

Jeff Bebe: I can't say anymore with the writer here.
Russell Hammond: No, no, no. You can trust him, you can say whatever you want.
Jeff Bebe: I work just as hard or harder than anybody on that stage. You know what I do? I connect. I get people off. I look for the guy who isn't getting off, and I make him get off.
Jeff Bebe: [to William] Actually, *that* you can print!

Patrick Fugit stars as William, the young man working to be a Journalist. He comes from a home consisting of a rebellious sister, played by Zooey Deschanel, and an intense mother, played by Frances McDormand, who wants the best for her children, but has done so by shutting them out from many things. William himself is a smart child, advanced a couple grades and at 15 in his senior year at high school.

After meeting a magazine editor Lester Bangs, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who instructs him not to make friends with rock stars, William attends a concert to write an article, only to befriend the band Stillwater, featuring an image obsessed lead singer played by Jason Lee and the more popular guitarist Russel, played by Billy Crudup. William also meets a Band Aide (opposed to a groupie) played by Kate Hudson. It is from here that William is given the opportunity to go on tour with the band, where he will experience a number of aspects of life he could have never dreamed of.

William Miller: Please don't give him any more acid.

This is a very well constructed film. It moves along effortlessly, combining a very entertaining story about this rock star life with comedy, some drama, and various character aspects that work well into the film.

All of the actors are very suited to their roles. Billy Crudup is very good as Russel the guitarist. Fugit, who has to carry much of the film, despite his young age, is very good as well. Jason Lee, as always does a good job delivering Jason Lee type dialog. McDormand is great as William's mother, but it is Kate Hudson who shows how good she can be, when she's not doing a terrible romantic comedy.

Once again, as a Cameron Crowe film, the soundtrack is awesome. All the tracks are picked specifically and are very fitting, along with the minor scoring provided by his wife and musical artist Nancy Wilson.

A really wonderful movie that makes great use of its setting and characters.

Lester Bangs: Aw, man. You made friends with them. See, friendship is the booze they feed you. They want you to get drunk on feeling like you belong.
William Miller: Well, it was fun.
Lester Bangs: They make you feel cool. And hey. I met you. You are not cool.
    William Miller: I know. Even when I thought I was, I knew I wasn't.
Lester Bangs: That's because we're uncool. And while women will always be a problem for us, most of the great art in the world is about that very same problem. Good-looking people don't have any spine. Their art never lasts. They get the girls, but we're smarter.
William Miller: I can really see that now.
Lester Bangs: Yeah, great art is about conflict and pain and guilt and longing and love disguised as sex, and sex disguised as love... and let's face it, you got a big head start.
William Miller: I'm glad you were home.
Lester Bangs: I'm always home. I'm uncool.
    William Miller: Me too!
Lester Bangs: The only true currency in this bankrupt world if what we share with someone else when we're uncool.
    William Miller: I feel better.
Lester Bangs: My advice to you. I know you think those guys are your friends. You wanna be a true friend to them? Be honest, and unmerciful.

Wow. What a movie. Great story, great characters, great acting. First of all, the supporting cast was terrific - Frances McDormand and Zooey Deschanel especially. Patrick Fugit did a great job, and portrayed naivete in his character, but with a heart of kindness and caring. Kate Hudson - one of the best performances I have ever seen...very alluring, coy yet knowing, guiding William as the movie progressed.
Having said all this, I thought the movie was ruined by a few scenes with some sexual content that was totally unnecessary. Yet another great movie ruined for me! I was saddened by that. I really loved the music, it was terrific, and the movie had something meaningful to say about how commercialization has tainted the idea of making music because you love to. I really wish the directors had more foresight before they ruined this movie with the content.

One 15-year-old kid was going to be famous....I mean, "Almost Famous". William Miller, a teenage reporter of the underground Creem publication, is hired by the editors of Rolling Stone magazine. So when Stillwater is on their 1973 tour, Will is assigned to interview them, through pieces of paper that would be his Rolling Stone article. It's a great coming-of-age chance in a lifetime when our lead character has to get away from life where he lived with an overprotective mother and finally accomplished his dreams. Of course, Will did find a lot more in life than just rock music. "Almost Famous" is directed by Cameron Crowe; stars Patrick Fugit, Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand; and Kate Hudson; and features a great soundtrack of artists such as Elton John and The Who. What can I say about "Almost Famous"? It's a great film. :)

    Synopsis

Writer and director Cameron Crowe's experiences as a teenage rock journalist -- he was a regular contributor to Rolling Stone while still in high school -- inspired this coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old boy hitting the road with an up-and-coming rock band in the early 1970s. Elaine Miller (Frances McDormand) strict single parent whose distrust of rock music has helped to drive a wedge between herself and her two children, Anita (Zooey Deschanel) and William (Patrick Fugit). Anita rebels by dropping out of school and becoming a stewardess, but William makes something of his love of rock & roll by writing album reviews for a local underground newspaper. William's work attracts the attention of Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman), editor of renegade rock magazine Creem, who takes William under his wing and gives him his first professional writing assignment -- covering a Black Sabbath concert. While William is unable to score an interview with the headliners, the opening act, Stillwater, are more than happy to chat with a reporter, even if he's still too young to drive, and William's piece on the group in Creem gains him a new admirer, an editor at Rolling Stone offers William an assignment for a 3,000-word cover story on Stillwater, and over the objections of his mother , and after some stern advice from Bangs, Williams joins Stillwater on tour, where he becomes friendly with guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and singer Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee). William also becomes enamored of Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), a Band Aid traveling with the band who is no older than William, but is deeply involved with Russell. Lester Bangs and Ben Fong-Torres, incidentally, were real-life rock writers Crowe worked with closely during his days as a journalist.

    My Review

Almost Famous is one of some real proves in the existancy of wheel of life. What I'm trying to say here is, you see Cameron Crowe here, and you see him 5 years later in Elizabethtown. Got the idea? If you haven't, let me make this clearer that Almost Famous is a real PIECE OF WORK and Elizabethtown is RUBBISH.

The whole idea is BRILLIANT, about the lives of rockstars, the rise and fall and all is really caught me. This is why I put Cameron Crowe as a good director in my list, his work here is untouchable, way too far from his downfall in Elizabethtown. I'm sorry, I just still don't get why those great directors who have gained good movies want able to cast Orlando Bloom as the lead actor in their movies. (NOTED: Ridley Scott-Kingdom of Heaven, Cameron Crowe-Elizabethtown) And thank God that the Penny Lane role was not given to Kirsten Dunst who was rumored to play the role, instead, she played in (again) Elizabethtown 5 years later. Bloom + Dunst = EARLY DOOMSDAY. Smart choice, Crowe! (total joking)

Back to the movie, Almost Famous gives a well written script, solid casts (the great actings from Frances McDormand and Kate Hudson, both deserve the Oscar Nomination), good rock musics, and the 70's set works. What I concern about is Anna Paquin that she should given more role here. She's a great actress (an Oscar in her age of 11 by the movie The Piano), it's a great start of career for the young girl. But until now, she mostly only known as the girl named Rogue in the X-Men series. She should be a promising Hollywood talent.

The characters bond to each other, but of course Penny Lane, played by Hudson, got the center of attention. This is the best Hudson's performance in a movie. The character's chemistry with Russell Hammond, played by Crudup is inevitable. Both barely speaks, but I guess Crowe got a great sense of picking the great actors for the roles ONCE. (I guess you all know why I bolded, biggered, and underlined the word)

Overall Almost Famous is a movie with interesting characters about how life can turn into, possibilities and most of all, ALMOST FAMOUS MADE A SPOT IN 2000's BEST LIST.

You CANNOT make friends with the rock stars. That's what's important. If you're a rock journalist - first, you will never get paid much. But you will get free records from the record company. And they'll buy you drinks, you'll meet girls, they'll try to fly you places for free, offer you drugs... I know. It sounds great. But they are not your friends. These are people who want you to write sanctimonious stories about the genius of the rock stars, and they will ruin rock and roll and strangle everything we love about it.

-Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bangs-

When I started watching this a few nights ago I was under the impression that i'd never seen it before. Turned out I had, probably back when it was first released. I remembered just how much I loved it back then, and now I know why. The whole film is just excellent. The performances all brilliant. I love Patrick Fugit, and I feel he really was a perfect choice for the character. Even after this film he's managed to stay under the radar, only being in a few indie films since this came out. He's a terrific actor and one to watch in the future. I've never really watched a whole lot of Kate Hudson's films and the ones I have seen have been stupid that don't show her off to what she is capable of. This film however, shows her in her true light. She is a very capable actress and hopefully we'll be able to see her in more roles like this one. I liked Jason Lee as one of the rock stars as well. He played the part very well and lit up the screen with some really brilliant acting. The plot is excellent and probably every music kid's dream (I.e. Me). Who wouldn't want to write for Rolling Stone at the age of 15 and tour with a band. If your into music then this film is for you. If your into fun films then this film is for you. I highly recommend this film.
