This movie would not have worked if it was anyone but Scorsesse directing. This movie shows the rise the mob led Vegas and how they lost it. The cast are all good except Sharon Stone who is ACTING so much it almost is a joke. This also has a "Goodfellas 2" vibe to it as well.
I have read some harsh reviews here about this movie. I can only say to those critics, "What were you expecting? A slick glamorized Hollywood depiction of mob life?" If that's what you're after, don't watch documentaries period! This is a doc folks. And for what it sets out to accomplish, it succeeds. Production value? Hey, for a song and a dance, a lot of volunteer help, and a few plates of pasta, Joe Alexandre pulled of a good, informative, and somewhat enlightening film. Interesting commentaries by friends and family members who recall the true events and people who actually knew these bad guys, interlaced with footage from mob movies, a Charlie Rose interview with Nicolas Peleggi, are well thought out, and edited to flow with ease. No one who 'testifies' here is going to say anything that will get them killed, but there is some honesty about the subject that you won't find in Hollywood story telling. For those who care to learn more about real history, for those who are interested in this little bit of American Culture, "Back Home Years Ago: The Real Casino" is worth every bit the tiny rental fee here and the few minutes it takes to watch it.
I put off seeing this movie for years because at least in my mind,it couldent hold a candle to Goodfellas, which is one of my akktime favorites. That and the fact that the running time is a minute shy of 3 hours.
But I will say this.Martin Scorsese did a good job directing and screenwritting.
Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci were great. But the biggest suprise is that Sharon Stone can actully act.
Hey,if you have 3 hours to kill, this movie woulden't be the worst way to kill it.
On SBS TV this Monday arvo they aired a documentary The American Ruling Class,
it's very apt considering the "GFC" ie Great Financial Crisis we are downward spiralling into.

Aesthetically loverly, particularly in hi-def. The use of lighting is almost overdramatic when you toss in the cigarette smoke that practically dances around the scenery, but looking at it like a moving painting, it's pretty damn awesome.
