Plot: Charlie Wilson was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. His "Good Time Charlie" exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a de...( read more read more... )ep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog, and in the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan-which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians. Charlie's longtime friend and patron and sometime lover was Joanne Herring, one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Believing the American response to the Russian invasion was anemic at best, she prods Charlie into doing more for the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters). Charlie's partner in this uphill endeavor is CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos, a blue-collar operative in a company of Ivy League blue bloods. Together, the three of them-Charlie, Joanne and Gust-travel the world to form unlikely alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers, law makers and a belly dancer.Their success was remarkable. Funding for covert operations against the Soviets went from $5 million to $1 billion annually. The Red Army retreated out of Afghanistan. When asked how a group of peasants was able to deliver such a decisive blow to the army of a superpower, Pakistani President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq responded simply, "Charlie did it."

Seymour-Hoffman is a pleasure to watch in this brilliant movie. A good movie from Tom Hanks after a long time.

This was pretty good actually. Tom Hanks had more to work with in this movie than he did with The Da Vinci Code, and he does what he does... which is brilliant.

Political movie. No action, low comedy, but if you can sit down and enjoy history and people getting things done without anything over the top ... then you'll like this movie.

It's extremely well acted! Hoffman is one if the very best and Hanks, Roberts are in the same league.
It tells a fact that really makes you think.

Who knew Tom Hanks could be a disreputable character. Of course, he does try to be a good guy as well. But I liked him better as a druggie.

This was such a pleasant surprise! Didn't hear about this movie being publicized. And wasn't really aware of Charlie Wilson's role in ending the Cold War. Philip Seymour Hoffman's acting here was the BEST! I liked him in Capote but his acting here is one of my all-time favorites.

tom hanks, julia roberts and amy adams are so good in this film based on a true story. i have to say philip seymour hoffman gets better with each project he undertakes. he was great in this movie. the story itself is touching in a david versus goliath way. it is also a testament to what it means to accept yourself warts and all because everyone has a purpose yet to be revealed. a man who didn't take himself seriously and wasn't regarded as worthy of any real attention pulls off what is basically a coup that no one saw coming. the film goes into the point at which he begins to see that he can do something and how as things get more complicated he sticks to the situation with deep conviction. the small group of dedicated people versus the behemoth power that was carelessly crushing them and watching them unite and turn the tide was touching. it had some corny parts but that's movie making. i loved the banter and the other sharp dialogue. the script was written in an old school fashion like hepburn and tracy movies. nichols' direction was great.

I like true story, showing the history. Sympathy, peace, and love are the fundament elements to form what human is.

Being an avid politics watcher this movie was right up my alley. Hoffman was phenomenal! That line about people with money and to much free time get into politics, was the best line ever! Julia looked great and Hanks was good well. If you are not into politics then don't waste your time, your probably to stupid to understand it anyway.

The movie successfully sparked in me an interest in Congressman Charlie's life and the history behind the Soviet/Afghan conflict. Ten points for that. Now if only the story was faster. The first half was rather boring. I think the movie's real savior was Philip Seymour Hoffman (who never fails to make me happy). Halfway through the film they finally throw him in, full force, and the film picks up. Though it would have been nice if the ending was constructed differently, I love to be able to sit down and watch a political film that doesn't slam you in the face with current Bush "mistakes".

A good movie overall (Hoffman's performance especially, as well as Hanks's), with a good balance between comedy and drama. Also, it's a very entertaining film that went by surprisingly quickly, at least for me.

Oh yeah the good old days, when Americans helped the Afghans defeat the Russians. What happened to the world anyway? Decent movie but a bit on the American side. You've been warned!

Clever satire with excellent performances, the script by Aaron Sorkin is definately the highlight who has done tremendous work on shows like West Wing, Sports Night and the short lived Studio 60. Subtle humor and climatic drama make the film fly by in an instant.

I was a bit afraid to watch this movie as I'm no fan of either Julia Roberts or Tom Hanks. But it was intelligent, funny, insightful, and a very entertaining film. I loved it.

Aaron Sorkin adapted the true events (from a book) that shape this story of a Texas Senator in the 70s and 80s whose involvement with the CIA in Afghanistan had a lasting effect on the way that part of the world is now, and our relations to it. Julia Roberts is a Southern belle, a socialite who claws her way into Wilson's world. And Philip Seymour Hoffman gives one of three terrific performances this year as a Greek-American CIA operative working with Wilson to bring a sense of geopolitical law and order to an unstable middle Eastern region (still unstable even now!). History and entertainment blend well in this short, bitter and cutting political comedy from Mike Nichols (PRIMARY COLORS, CLOSER).

"Sometimes a movie can ride on the fact that it's got big and talented stars and a clever script and it works just fine. However in the case of Charlie Wilson's War that simply isn't enough, because the rest it has to offer feels muddled, confusing, and irritatingly restrained."

December 2007 (Director: Mike Nichols) This is good movie making! Wonderful performance. Amazing performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman (Twister). I BELIEVED these characters & believed IN them. Ned Beatty stars as Defense Committee Chairman & Julia Roberts as a religious anti-communist lobbyist. Covert operations, good ol' boys & anti-communism.
