Tommy Lee Jones' powerful, haunted performance elevates this tense piece above the standard of the numerous other movies out in recent times dealing with the Iraq conflict. While it could have brought its ideas together more, this is still a strong and compassionate look at the human side of the war.

MCT:September 29, 2008This film is loosely based off a true story... I say loosely because after watching this movie I was compelled to do some research about the true events. What I found was that the movie misrepresented the true story drastically.
Leave it to Hollywood to take a sad story and claim to pay "homage" to this misfortuned soldier and his family by telling the world what really happened... yet the end result is a film that chronicles nothing about the true events. Damn you Hollywood....
Had I not found out about this, I would've given this movie much higher accolades. Hell, they didn't even use the victim's real name in the movie! The way in which he was killed, and even the motives were all completely different. The only resemblance the film holds to the real event is that a soldier who returned from Iraq was killed by his fellow soldiers. I won't go into any more details because I dont' want to spoil the movie for anyone.
If you can go into this movie knowing it's not based on a true story, you might be able to enjoy it more. Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron were excellent together in this film. Susan Sarandon was amazing as well. This film is a thriller and will leave you guessing to the end... but for me at least, all the good things I liked about this movie were completely deflated when I found out the truth about the events.
Still a solid film, and worth a watch, especially if you enjoyed other war-based dramas like Stop Loss or Home of the Brave. -

This movie should be the most intresting movie I've seen in a long time, the photo is great the story is mindpuzzeling and the acting is over the top notch, but the movie dulls down cause if it lack of intresst, the first half hour is gret you know nothing and then it slups down to "aha, know I got it" Paul Haggis did a great jobb with crash but here he takes it easy and shows more human sides then we are used to, Tommy Lee Jones is great as a desperate father trying to find out the truth about his son's dissappearing, thou its a part he been used to do, chasing for the truth... we should all chase the truth sometime in our life, and this movie shows the way how and way we need to be shown the truth before become savage beasts.

This movie was a bit slow at times, but not uncomfortably so. The acting was very good from all of the cast, and the story kept me guessing all the way through. The film doesn't have a nice message, but it does have a true one: as one character says "they shouldn't send heroes to Iraq."

Like Jonathon tucker 4 example an amazing actor who didnt get enough to do in this movie, not to mention Josh brolin and james franco aswell

What a sad story... The story of our lives since we are all involved in wars, either we like it or not.
This movie is very emotional. Haggis added one more masterpiece to his career and provided us all with a very profound filming. Steady, lyric, like a poem.
Realistic and tragic.
Excellent performance by Tommy Lee Jones and a beautiful script. -
I have high movie tolerance. But my Christianity simply would not allow me to finish this movie. I just had to take it out, which is a bummer, because it was becoming such a good story.

MCT:August 21, 2008First off, I must say that I was very much disappointed by the movie. Although the Oscar do not mean as much as they used to qualitywise, I did not expect a movie like this to be nominated. The worst thing about this movie is the story. I know that it is based on true events and I do not mind the outcome but the arc is dull and as good as without interesting plot twist. It feels like a documentary about a situation where not much happened. The grim undertone critizing the Iraq war nearly gave me a fit. So, the Americans build themselves a pile of shit (Iraq War) and then give otu awards to people who notice it after years ? Well, the rest of the world could've told you in the first place. Talking about Americanism, the movie is full of cliches and the charachters came straight out of a pulp novel. The female cop, having a hard time in her male dominated workplace, the young and innocent, yet disturbed soldieres. The good hearted stripper, trying to make a living and so on - boring. Tommy Lee ones saves a few minutes, as his character has got some edges here and there that make him feel alive. All in all, you can see what the movie tried to be, a calm yet grim portrait of the side effects of the Iraq war, but it fails.

MCT:August 12, 2008Realistic and gripping in every possible way. In The Valley of Elah shows how devestating it truly is to lose a loved one, and also takes a look at the most repulsive side of war. Tommy Lee Jones is incredibly fortunate to have starred in two incredible movies this year, and he especially shines in this one as a father determined to find those responsible for the loss of his son.

This is a movie that makes you wonder what happened to the heroes. Explores the change that happens the soldiers so they can deal with the horrors of their environment. Deep, penetrating and disturbingly true.

While not the perfect follow up to 'Crash' this was a very valient effort and while I am not suprised it did poorly at the box-office, it should have done better with the critics and on the awards cirrcut. Poinient and relovent, using a perfect combination of tough drama and smart comedy this story is weaved together masterfully. The soundtrack was lack luster (that closing song with Annie Lennox only proves my letter to the editor was right) and at first I wasn't too sure about the lack of close-ups; all medium shots of further- but i got over both issues. Every character gives it everything from the majors (Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron) to the majors with minimal lines (James Franco and especially Susan Sarandon). So while the anti-war message is screaming clear, it's all very well done and was a film I was supprissed to enjoy.

Trying to rationalize In the Valley of Elah will challenge your views. The cast of this film is simply phenomenal. Tommy Lee Jones holds the production to a very high standard, and watching him trying not to burst into tears is probably one of the more powerful moments in the film. This movie holds nothing back and forces us to peer into those places we dare not look.
