Beautiful cinematography in this ancient love story. Very well acted and filled with traditional Japense Customs. If you loved the movie or if you didn't you should still definetly read the book , of course it's better.

The story is a total cliche... but to hell with that. Rob Marshall directed this film so beautifully, amidst the wretched portrayals of the Japanese by Chinese actresses (which makes me wonder, why didn't they go for Japanese actresses instead?). The fact that they did not stay true to the native Japanese language got in my nerves too. Its kinda painful to hear them speak English with that Chinese twang.

Those are my only problems with this movie. The rest - cinematography, score, art direction, costumes - are unmistakably beautiful.

Beautiful movie but sad. I don't think its a great thing to be a geisha. I felt sorry for the main character. Poor girl.

It may not be prostitution but its almost like selling your soul. Also why is the male lead character older than she is? It should've been someone near her age.

I liked the ending in the movie better than the book, because in the book it reminded you that he has a wife, where as in the movie you feel that it is just them two. Holy hell she is pretty..:)

This movie was really really good. It had everything that I could possibly want in a geisha movie minus the sex scenes. The costumes were absolutely astounding. The fabrics and the hair and everything are just SO beautiful! The story plot was very good and I am pleased with how the movie ended. It's just the kind of romantic movie that I like.

Read the book, then you'll understand my rating. It is exquisite to look at with stunning performances though.

If I could have gotten past all the frustrations of this "asian" movie i MAY have been able to enjoy it. But yeh, I couldnt.

The imagery is stunning, the plot interesting, and the end bittersweet, however, some of the dialogue and a few of the ideas running through the story I do not believe would be authentically Japanese and tend to cater to an American audience. This lets the film down quite a lot in my opinion.

Why do Asian people get to be so damn pretty anyway? The movie itself has fleeting moments of beauty, but not enough of them to make up for the fact that, at it's core, it's just another one of those crap epic love stories.

The experience of watching this film is mesmerizing. Not only is it beautiful, but the acting is terrific all around. I didn't want it to end. Can't wait to see it again to soak in the atmosphere and story more deeply. The use of color alone is worth studying closely. Later revelations paint certain characters in whole new lights, so I look forward to watching those performances again more omnisciently, to see nuances I'd missed.

Amazing movie, I love it. Based on the book of the same title, but I find the book has more information then the movie does. I love the dance part :)

"A life to struggle , a life to perform , a life to sacrifice ,an artist life , being a beauty , a real Geisha life.. "
    Xoxo, Channelia .

    Channelia's words

Innocent thoughts become beauty , beauty causes story , sometimes tragic and happy .

Beauty is held by a Geisha named Sayuri(Zhang Ziyi) . Sayuri was the perfect potrayal of Geisha at that time , the flawless beauty , the flawless performances and beautifully tragic love-story .
Geisha is a delicately settled by Rob Marshall . One of the most appealing beauty from East-Asia themed movie .
From score to cinematography , it was perfect .

Geisha came with great mixture of beautiful cinematography , mighty score , great setting , beautiful costumes and make-up and great actors . Even with English language , Geisha still looks realistic and mesmerizing .

Zhang Ziyi as Innocent Sayuri , Michelle Yeoh as elegant Mameha and Gong Li as depressed and wicked Hatsumomo showed gorgeous performance , both emotions and body languages .
Either Ken Watanabe as the wise-kind-hearted chairman and Koji Yakusho .
Last but not Least , is the Yoki Kudo as the comedic cruel Pumpkin . The fresh touch for the tragedy and drama .

At the end, Memoirs Of Geisha is a gorgeous creation from Rob Marshall which serves excitement eventhough it is drama and 2 hours ++ running time .

"Remember, Chiyo, geisha are not courtesans. And we are not wives. We sell our skills, not our bodies. We create another secret world, a place only of beauty. The very word "geisha" means artist and to be a geisha is to be judged as a moving work of art."

The film is simply technically perfect. The retro-mood it created had me immensed in the world of geisha from beginning to the end. The story also never dragged, as each of the three parts flowed nicely. The main problem is with character development. Except for some verbal back-and-forth between the two and a few dirty tricks from Li Gong, there was no reason to believe why she was the most famous geisha in Japan before Ziyi Zhang arrived. All of the cast performances were good.
