Aw. I really liked this movie. I never thought a giant gorilla would be so sweet, but they really did a good job on this movie.
In a fake African jungle, a fake little girl loses her fake mom at the same time as a fake overgrown baby gorilla loses his, and a fake emotional bond develops between them. Twelve years later, when the little girl has grown into Charlize Theron (what are the odds of that?) and the gorilla into Son of Kong, a fake scientist (Bill Paxton) and a team of fake poachers seek to catch the beast, having a go at both the CGI creature and the man in the animatronics suit. A fake romance then develops between boy and girl as the gorilla is brought to America by a fake Greedy Entrepreneur.
I rather liked the original as a teenager, mostly for stupid reasons having to do with the fact that it was in black and white, had stop motion sequences, was one of my mum's childhood favorites and starred a girl who reminded me of a high school physics teacher I had a mild crush on. But I couldn't stand this Disneyan remake, just as I can't stand most of what Disney produces. It is to Dian Fossey what "National Treasure" is to Freemasonry or "Pocahontas" to Pocahontas.
I love movies that feature animals, and Mighty Joe Young is no exception. This is a good movie, and while it's not a great movie, it is very watchable. The characters in the movie are loveable, and the movie will be enjoyed by all ages.
MMmmm... Charlize Theron....
I liked it, was was sweet, and comical, with a little adventure thrown in.
