Plot: In 1953, a time when women's roles were rigidly defined, free-spirited, novice art history professor Katherine Watson begins teaching at the prestigious all-female Wellesley College--which despite its...( read more read more... ) academic reputation, is an environment where success is measured by 'how well' the students marry. Encouraging these women to strive for a more enlightened future, Watson challenges the administration and inspires her students to look beyond the image of what is, and consider the possibilities of what could be--contrary to popular belief.

It's a fortune women have gone beyond the limits of the society described in the film.
The film is a glimpse into a cultural which is gone for good.
I prefer women building a BETTER WORLD. They will continue with the God given roll of building families, but also they have a roll to play as society transformers.

Good story completely wasted by lack of proper presentation..

Great cast.. brilliant performances but the movie could have been enjoyed a lot more if supported by a more solid screenplay..

It was the cast of this film that initially attracted me to it. With Julia Roberts, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst and Julia Stiles all members of the cast, the film was obviously doing something right to attract some really big names to it.
It didn't realise that this film would have such an important message to send out. I found it quite startling just how much society has changed within such a short about of time. Only 50 years ago people really did think the way is demonstrated in this film. As it did have something quite important to say, it would have to do it very successfully otherwise it would not do the subject matter justice. I felt that it did do it justice. The message of women having equal rights isn't so much of an issue nowadays because by law everyone is equal even if there is still discrimination. Still, it was a wonderful story. Roberts plays an art history teacher who arrives at an all girls college. Her views and teaching methods are considerably different to the old fashioned views of the school. Over the year of her placement she wins over the young women and shows them that they have choices in life and do not have to accept that they must get married and be a housewife. Robert's isn't a completely obvious choice for the character if you ask me. She isn't exactly an actress that I associate with serious films but she does a really good job and shows her strengths. The other actresses compliment the cast and each other perfectly. In my opinion Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the most interesting character and also gives the best performance of the film. She plays a very independent woman who falls deeply in love with a teacher who does not lover her back. Some of her scenes are very powerful and as always she is a pleasure to watch. Kirsten Dunst also, surprisingly does a very good job. I know a lot of people don't really like her but I think she has a lot of potential that we have just not seen yet. In this film we don't exactly get to see all of that potential but there are glimpses. Her character is very much conservative in her views and is one of the girls that gets married during the film. She is also the character that goes through the biggest transition and development in the film. Dunst does a very good job with it and towards the end really shines in the role. Julia Stiles plays the most promising character, professionally, in the film. As an A grade honour student she also goes through quite a lot of development throughout the film. She's definatly an actress that has not being given the chance to show what she has in her, and with this performance thing seem promising if only she'd stay away from those awful teen flicks she seems to be drawn to.
Overall a very good film that very much surprised me. It has a very clear message that all those years ago things were very different and that these were the kinds of influential women who changed things for the better, but it also relates to people today, not just women, but men as well. It's about making the most of yourself and excelling in whatever choices you make.

This is a good film mainly thanks to Maggie Gyllenhaal and in particular Kirsten Dunst - who shines here with the strongest performance. My problem is Julia Roberts: here is the Queen of "chick-flicks" telling a younger generation that they should be themselves, follow their dreams, and not conform to established gender roles. If it had been someone like Kate Winslet or Meryl Streep, it would have worked, but this just feels hypocritical.

Could have been better with someone else in the lead. It just seemed like Julia Roberts just mailed in her performance. There was actually good to great acting from almost everyone else involved. The story was kind of predictable, but if you are interested in the subject matter then you will enjoy the movie.

Emancipation begins with one person action , in this movie , she is Katherine Watson .

Breaking a tradition is a hard thing to do but the way Katherine broke the tradition was very sweet, heartwarming and brutally elegant .

Picking Julia Roberts as Katherine Watson was a great things . She acted greatly and touching enough .

This drama really a 'girl thing' , because it defended girl's rights in life , the way the tradition 'tortured' them in every single way .

The connection between the girls really nice but i saw displeasing act of Julia Stiles . Kirsten Dunst and Maggie Gyllenhaal did it well .

1953 was a great timing and it's very pleasing .

I love the heartwarming and elegant simplicity of this movie .

Loved it! Not the first time I saw it though, I guess I was a bit too young for this. But it's so sweet! The only one I didn't really care about was Julia Stiles, but the rest of the characters were fantastic, especially Betty (Kirsten Dunst) and Maggie Gyllenhaal! The part where Betty starts shouting (although I hate to admit this) always makes me cry.

It's somehow similar to Dead Poets; a movie about thinking independently, not following the 'normal' schemes. There're 2 main differences between both movies: firstly, 'Mona Lisa...' is set in a girls' school; secondly, it is simply worse. Which doesn't mean it's bad, of course.

    MONA LISA'S SMILE

Not everything is as it seems, Mona Lisa may smile but is she happy? Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts) heads towards the famous exclusive private school for girls of Wellesley College to teach Art History. All her high hopes are dashed out as she realizes that the prestigious school determines a successful student in "'how well' the students marry" Katherine challenges and defies the malign traditions of the faculty board and the school's Editor-in-Chief, Betty (Kirsten Dunst) to show there's more to women's roles than what society labels her to be. Armed with her principles and dream of making a difference this "unwanted and unorthodox" teacher whose brains make-up for her lack of pedigree, slowly influences and touches the lives of her students, Dubbed as the female version of Dead Poet's Society, Mona Lisa's Smile is composed of an all-star female cast with Roberts in the lead, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Marcia Gay Harden.

Julia Roberts and the supporting cast is great, but the overall movie experience of Mona Lisa Smile is short of extraordinary. It tries so hard to be the Dead Poets Society with girls, and it comes up short.

Loved Julia in this - by far my favorite Julia Roberts performance and a movie I own. Outstanding performances by all in this star-studded cast. About a forward thinking woman in the early 1950s who is a Art History Professor, and tries to aspire the young woman in her class to reach beyond the 1950s model for woman of the "stay at home" wife and mother.

It was an enjoyable movie to watch, but it was very predictable and followed the typical Hollywood formula.
