Plot: While reinventing Leopold and Loeb for a new and troubled millennium, Murder by Numbers probes the disturbing psychology of two teenaged murderers and the cleverness of their crime. Like Hitchc...( read more read more... )ock's Rope and other films inspired by the Leopold and Loeb case of the 1920s, the film intensifies as it explores the repressed (and subtly homosexual) tensions between high-school outcasts Richard (Ryan Gosling) and Justin (Michael Pitt), who randomly kill a woman to enact an amoral philosophy--and to tease a savvy homicide detective (Sandra Bullock) with misleading clues. While clashing with the by-the-book procedure of her partner (Ben Chaplin), Bullock gives one of her best performances in a role that comes with its own set of psychological hurdles. It's comfortable territory for Reversal of Fortune director Barbet Schroeder, who draws fine work from his cast while proving that there's no such thing as a perfect crime. --Jeff Shannon

    This movie is ok.
not really what i was hoping for but still watchable

    IMDb info:
Richard Haywood, a Californian high school's coolest kid, secretly teams up with another rich kid in his class, brilliant nerd Justin 'Bonaparte' Pendleton, whose erudition, specially in forensic matters, allows them to plan elaborately perfect murders, just for the kick, for which they set up Richard's marijuana supplier, their school's janitor Ray Feathers, as a psychotic serial killer. The case is assigned to detectives Cassie 'the hyena' Mayweather, who carries a sequoia-size chip on the shoulder from her previous life, and her brilliant new partner, Sam Kennedy, who just transferred from the vice squad; they can work together very well, and even fit romantically, but fall out over different professional attitudes towards the investigation, which Captain Rod Cody and her understandably vindictive abused ex, Assistant D.A. Al Swanson, soon ban her from when she disobeys instructions and hand to him. When the plotting boys both dig class-mate Lisa Mills, their unnatural bond comes under stress- will it break, allowing the hard-pressed police to bring them down?

08-24-08 --What seems to be a smartly made movie just turns out to be a murder mystery with a bunch of twists to keep you watching. It was a good movie now don't get me wrong. Sandra Bullock was ok Ryan Gosling was better. By genre this may be a must see for some people.

Well i'm deeply confused here. This film contains very smart elements enriching the plot, but it's ultra dumb at the same time !
I mean couldn't they just track their phones for example ?
Leads to a silly and predictable hollywoodish finale.
Pretty much fair flick I can say, with some rather good suspensful moments, but we've all seen it before.

Numbers takes Richard (Gosling) and Justin (Pitt), two high school students at opposite ends of the popularity spectrum and plots them against Cassie (Bullock) and her new forensics partner Sam (Chaplin) in a tale of who dunit murder. Murder By Numbers is a film that opts for a conservative outlook on disturbed psychology. It argues that people don?t kill because their fundamental thinking is subject to such abuse or isolation at an early age that they cannot function in anything other than compulsive ways or maintain normal relationships, but rather that they do so simply out of a conscious choice to be evil or a moral vacuum at the center of their lives. Murder By Numbers is a film that you feel ever so slightly has drawn up firm moral divides about the nature of teen crime. Here the teens are conducting some kind of experiment in amorality. The brillant performances by Michael Pitt and Ryan Gosling. They are bad guys, but they have what it takes to get you to like them. They also like each other. Using each other's weaknesses against one another, it's a game of power and control where often times it seems as if at any moment the pair were going to break out into mad monkey sex. But alas the plot simply was too overburdened in other places to allow such a devilish twist, and we're achingly pulled back into the tired boring cop storyline. Sandra Bullock unfortunately comes nowhere near giving the role the harder edge that it is written with. She's just the same cute, vaguely flustered Sandra Bullock she always is and the character's toughness never extends beyond a couple of scenes where she chews out her co-workers.

Really good movie. It seemed like the perfect murder. Michael Pitt and Ryan Gosling are great in this movie. I can't believe the ending though.

creepy to see the kid from Funny Games in a similar film. I think this would've been a better film if the story focused on either the killers or the detective, taking on both seemed underdeveloped and unfocused.

Best murder movie ever. The motive based on unbelieveable philosophical background. (Now, people need to be aware how dangerous it is) Gosling is simply amazing!

Loved the whole weird gay thingy going on.. And the whole 'CSI feel'. Loved everything except the ending. You pick a villian and he falls to his death. End of story? Happy ever after? Noo.. Frail innocent partner-in-crime turns out to be the ultimate baddie. Come on, writer-who-wrote-cheesy-scene, that's so cliched. Oh and despite my loving her performance, Bullock's wardrobe was just plain yucky, seriously. Surely, anti-social, loner crime-fighters can find decent clothing?

What does the title have to do with anything in the movie? Whatever, its still a solid story. Ms. Bullock acts a little retarded in the beginning, but she cuts it loose at the end. Worth that third star. Yay.

Saw this on TV once and it wasn't too bad. I wouldn't have known it was a take on Rope, which was definately better, but it was fine on its own. I did like the outcome. A little unexpected.

A clever story of murder and betrayl that unfolds before your very eyes. Engaging the whole way through, this film literally leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat! Well explained and with good development of characters, this film a definite to watch.

This movie gives its own spoiler, which is disappointing. Bullock's performance is good, but somehow unengaging. I still prefer Hitchcock's approach in "Rope" to this updated version.

Very good thriller. The story flows very nicely and you can follow it normally, it's not one of those movies you have to crack your head to understand it (The Black Dahlia for instance).
Ryan Gosling is a masterpieace of God. <3

Awesome performance by Ryan Gosling!!! this is the main reason why I rated it so high. Sandra Bullock wasn't right for the role, the story was okay tho.

Ryan Gosling gives a memorable performance in this otherwise forgetful remake of Hitchcock's Rope. Note to Sandra Bullock - stick to cute and vulnerable, not bitchy/bossy/macho and vulnerable.
