This was a really touching movie. While the substitute teacher first makes her journey based on greed alone, both she and the missing student realize how much they miss one another. Their plight is finally picked up by the press and it not only reunites them but helps the suffering village. A real heart warmer.
I love films like this about stubborn females overcoming obstacles. It's a good film. I was going to list the Story of Qiu Ju as well here, but it wasn't in the database. Both are Zhang Yimou fims. (NT)
A simple, tender little film about a young girl's journey. Cute, sad and filled with emotionally moments that Yimou directs with a matter-of-fact approach.
One of the finest movie to come-out of mainland China. Moving. Touching. Funny. Endearing. Wei Minzhi is a real discovery!
Unforgettable.
A breathtaking achievement - beautiful like all Zhang Yimou pictures whether huge or low-budgeted. His movies, especially this one, move me to tears! This one is so small-scale it's shot without actors, only real people playing themselves! It tells a true story and displays the beauty & tragedy of real life.
A Chinese film sensation that swept through the United States. Obviously better than the average US film, but not that great in Chinese movie standards.
Wonderful!! It was one of my first foregn language films. I was 10 then. Engaging and beautiful. It's a must see. Great plot and acting.
My Chinese teacher in high school showed the film to the class...and just sat there, I think he could hear our silent tears.
strongly showed the traditional cultural pattern that exists in China:
if you are my teacher for one day.
you are my teacher for life.
watch and learn.
watch and love.
ps: she will keep the number. not one less.
A touching story about a relief-teacher and her journey to find one of her missing students. One of Zhang Yi Mou's earlier work, which IMHO is more sincere then his recent works, staying true to basics, which is to tell a good story.
the director of this fil is really impressive...aside from the fact that the story itself is superb..
Zhang Yimou, along with other fifth generation Chinese directors, felt the ramifications of Chairman Mao's rule and saw the dramatic affect of his policies - some of which lead to widespread poverty - first hand. It's no surprise then, that Yimou donates much of his work to the exploration and examination of proletariat and peasant life. The cast of Not One Less are entirely non-actors, but the script and direction allow for natural, authentic characters. This reflects the performances themselves - notably Wei Minzhi as the ultimately stubborn substitue teacher, way out of her depth. The story is rather sentimental, but never schmaltzy and is ultimately warm, heart-felt and rather touching.
Superb story but it was hindered because of the acting and the redundancy - perhaps too naturalistic
