Steven Spielberg's grisly realistic account of a squad of D-Day survivors sent behind enemy lines on a PR mission to rescue the last son of a devastated Iowa family. Tom Hanks gives a staggering perfo...( read more

I agree with another reviewer elsewhere that, in a list of top five Spielberg movies, this one has to be among the group. Saving Private Ryan is an absolutely remarkable and riveting motion picture.
The scene in the Omaha beach is unbelieving but likely true and not just a make-up for scene excitement to attract viewers, during D-Day, the Americans find themselves stuck against Gen. Rommel?s Asparagus defensive design in Normandy shores and do a lot of catching up with Allies to free France from German Nazis.
The story envelopes to save the last remaining Ryan sibling in war-torn France led by Tom Hanks!
Saving Private Ryan is about as powerful as movies get. It is a very intense and emotional experience and just like Spielberg's greatest films it is unforgettable. Tom Hanks is so good in this film it hurts. Everything artistic and technical from the cinematography to the sound are all breathtaking. There are some dark humour parts that could have been left out because they detract from the seriousness of the film. Nevertheless, this is an important film.
La mejor película bélica que he visto, aunque la trama no es la mejor, esta película se luce por su ambientación, fotografía, realismo y crudeza.
One of THE best war movies ever. The reality is outstanding. No John Waynes in this movie.
Surprisingly the biggest let down is Ryan himself. Matt Damon sucks in this movie.
By far the best war film I have ever seen. The D-Day opening sequence was very real and it showed us the hell that the soldiers went through that day. Great director Steven Spielberg and a great cast. Tom Hanks almost won an Oscar for his performance but was beaten by Roberto Benigni.
The story is not that of the whole invasion but it tells us the bravery of a group of soldiers trying to bring back a soldier behind enemy lines. Tom Hanks is great as the group Captain Miller. Support cast was outstanding. Especially the Sniper guy, Jackson. Everytime he owns a German, he's like saying a line from the Bible which is really cool. He is a killer but he still loves the Guy Upstairs. The ending was heart-wrenching. Those guys were so brave that they are willing to sacrifice their lives for one man. That was their dilemma throughout the whole film, they risked their lives so a hundred or a thousand people may live but in this one, they are risking their lives so a man can live. And still, they didn't back down.
Great dialogue, great cast, great director, great ending, great visual effects. In this movie, everything is great.
Saw the beginning sequence. OMG. This actually makes you feel as if your there in the horrid war and it makes you feel so lucky that your not there.
It's horrible how realistic it is, you feel so sorry for the people fighting. You can't explain it.
He (Tom Hanks) really pulls it off in this movie and proves the skill that we have long suspected is there within the man.
Not high on the rewatchable scale for me, but I'm glad I saw it. One of the only films I've ever been in where the audience sat in dead silence for about 10 seconds after the movie ended.
Not as good as people make out, but the opening scenes are incredibly realistic. Afetr that it was pretty much a war film
oh if i could cry...the tissue box please. Amazing empowering story...what a performance by the cast *singles out, because it must be done* and Tom Hanks!
i have watched this movie many times... and i always feel the same way every time, as if i am there experiencing the events. war is mindless and horrid, and yet this film's cast and spielberg rise to a level of filmmaking that is truly masterful, and moving.
Uncompromising war movie which packs a powerful, emotional punch, managing to portray equally the inhumanity of war and the humanity of those caught up in it. An essential part of your DVD collection
The opening is astonishing, although after that it treads in thick mud and feels like The Longest Day. It's a shame that a serious subject it left wallowing like that
I remember watching this at the cinema and during the opening scences in this film I have never know it so quiet. Not even a crisp packet got opened. This is so well directed and acted there is nothing that can be faulted in this. Although the beginning of the film gives u question these are answered by the end of it. Although not a masive fan of war films this tells the story of the men that fought and their feeling of what is happening around them
Even though I was only Four when the movie came out. I watched it recently, very realistic. And sad, some parts I wanted to laugh, and others I wanted to cry at. Highly recommended.
It took me three viewings to get to see the complete thing, the first two times I tried to watch it something would come up and I'd have to leave it less than halfway through .. I really hate to do that no matter what I'm watching but sometimes you just can't help it!!
The thing is, when it comes to Saving Private Ryan I guess that having things happen the way they did made me love it even more, by the second time I got interrupted during it I was obsessed with watching it properly.. Once I saw the opening scene I could tell this was going to be no less than a masterpiece
So when I finally got around to seeing it I was in the mood and it was indeed worth the wait..
The ultimate war movie, so realistic, so gripping, superb direction not to mention terrific character development
And yes, it is sentimental, it gets emotional at times.. So what? It's doesn't mean it's fake, it doesn't weaken the plot in any way or make it too "Hollywoody"!!
Perfect by all means..
Loved it, Tom Hanks did a awesome part potraying Cpt. Miller. I also give shout-outs to- Barry Pepper "Pvt. Jackson",Edward Burns "Pvt. Rymain" and Tom Sizemore "Sgt. Horvath". Overall I belive it was a great story and the acting and the scenes from Omaha Beach were brillaint! 5/5
I watched it, But as I am NOT into WAR Movies , I could say it was kinda sorta a good One to watch..
Ok I saw this one- But I am not into WAR movies, But You might be and You might even like it..Just Try it..
Great movie, but the beginning of this flick is awesome. Then, how it ends...Can't help but at LEAST choke-up for the old Ryan.
I love this movie so much. I've seen it like a million times now and it always makes me cry, especially when Wade and Cpt Miller dies. An amazing cast makes an even more incredible preformence. in love with this movie.
what can i say, if you haven't seen this movie u are a tool, and if you hate this movie you should be subject ot a firing squad, and if you love it you are cool... GREAT FUCKIN MOVIE

Game, since this was a PR mission, it is feasable that a Cpt. would be sent out. Now if you really want to get picky, from a veterans point of view, get down on the true innacuracies. Walking in enemy territorry talking loud like they were doing will get you dead real quick. Why are all the automatic weapons carriers not using their bipods? I wouldnt want them covering me, likely miss the enemy and shoot me in the back!. And this jive walking around on top of ridges, making themselves perfect targets for the enemy?, and those are just a few things I noticed. They must have either ignored or had a lousy technical advisor for this one. Spielbeg just wanted to make a war flick. The cowardly individual and Spielberg saying he could relate to this character pretty much sums up the contempt I have for the political line he took in this film, and kissing butt to the ww2 generation to sell this movie is contemptable, they deserve better. Band of Brothers was better...
I agree with the last poster that this was hanks best role. after watching saving private ryan I thought of my father and how he never spoke of the war and only one time he did it was just to say when he got home there were hardly any "men left". Band of Brothers(the hbo show) was awesome, it showed of will and fortitude these young men had. I dont know if there will ever be another generation like the ww2 generation. thank god for them, their all gone..
one of the best movies of the actor Tom Hanks...his charector show us how the real man behave at the emergency moments....for what we live if we have no aim ...his aim saving the young solieder while he was losing control on his life ...but he did his duty...the best role he did it
A Captain (Hanks) would never be sent on a mission commanding only 7 Soldiers. Captains usually command a Company, which most of the time consists of 2 Platoons. A Staff Sergeant is the perfect Commanding Officer for a 8-Men Mission. Also, one of the Soldiers in the group (Sizemore) is a Segeant First Class, They normally are Senior Assistant Officer's for a Platoon's Commading Liutenant. Sorry Spielberg, But Captains are way too high in rank for this type of mission and a Sergeant First Class wouldnt be assigned as Assistant in this situation.

I salute to all those soldiers - American, British, Canadian
