Set up to be unlawfully sentenced to the infamous island prison of Chateau D'If, Edmond is trapped in a nightmare that lasts for thirteen years. Over time everything he ever believed about right and wrong is abandoned and replaced by all-consuming thoughts of vengeance against those who betrayed him. With the help of an equally innocent fellow inmate, Dantes plots and succeeds in his mission to escape from prison, whereupon he transforms himself into the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. With cunning ruthlessness, he cleverly insinuates himself into the French nobility and systematically destroys the men who manipulated and enslaved him.

"Because you are the son of a clerk! I am not supposed to want to be you!" -- Fernand Mondego. Possible slash with Edmond Dantes? Plus the whole scene of bare-handed tumbling outside a castle...I'll quote Pirate for this one:"The line between love and hate is very thin."

"The Count of Monte Cristo" (2002), a contempo back-to-basics treatment of the famous Dumas novel for new generations, spins its tale of passion and revenge with all the glory and melodrama of Hollywood's golden years. Full of lavish costuming, sumptuous sets, beautiful locations, dashing men, a gorgeous damsel, dank dungeons, the ever popular swashbuckling etc., all supported with a classic story makes for 2+ hours of solid entertainment.

I gotta be honest. This movie sucked. "The Count of Monte Cristo" is one of my favorite books and I must say that this move butchered it. There were so many inconsistencies and so many things that were just wrong with it. Alexandre Dumas is turning in his grave after this piece of junk. The fact that Dantes ends up with Mercedes in the end is horrific. That totally screws up the story altogether. The Count found love again with Haydee. Mercedes' chance was lost the minute she married Fernand who, by the way, was NOT DANTES' FRIEND FROM THE VERY BEGINNING! And all the count pretty much does after he escapes prison is just kill everyone. What happened to the carefully wrought revenge? What happened to death not being the most severe punishment? What happened to the amazing and perfect way in which the Count traps his betrayers within their own lives? Without these elements the movie is just a horrid soap opera about sloppy revenge. Not the beautiful creation readers know it to be.

I completely LOVE this movie! The characters are made great as the persons who makes them come real! Especially Jim Caviezel as Dantes and Richard Harris as the Abbé. But everyone is fantastic! I just have wachted it over and over and over again, and I just never get sick of the plot! Amazing movie!!

The beauty of this movie is that their is a very deep and powerful message. This movie extends further then exacting revenge. God said "Veangeance is mine" and the priest tells Edmund this, but he chooses revenge. In the end he recognizes the error of his ways and he makes a promise that "all that was used for vengeance will now be used for good!"

One of my favourite movies! The acting is great, and the story is very well put together. Of course, the book is better, but books are almost always better than their movies anyways.

truly inspiring! amazing! i love this movie! What touched me most was that when Dantes struggles deeply with his belief in God yet he moved and experienced mature faith. The priest confesses..."when they asked me about the treasure in Sparta, i lied". "you lied?" Dantes asks. "I'm a priest, not a saint". Then he told him how to use the map to find the treasure. "When you escape," the priest continues, "use the treasure for good. Only for good." "No," Dantes says angrily. I will surely use it for my revenge." The priest says, "This is your final lesson. Do not commit the crime-(the priest struggles for a breath)for which you now serve the sentence. God said, "Vengeance is mine". Dantes says, " But I don't believe in God." "It doesn't matter," the priest responds with a smile. "He believes in you." WOW! I love that!!!

The film is excellent, so much better than the 70's one I think it is, now that was crap.
But the book was so fantastic and so easy following, depending on which translation you read.
Either way I strongly recommend you to read the book, its huge but it's awesome!
