Plot: A woman with extrasensory perception is asked to help find a young woman who has disappeared.
Fantastic cast, loved the way Cate Blanchett gave off a very convincing Southern accent, Giovanni Ribisi was probably the best of the cast as a mentally disturbed car repairman (makes me think of his role as Nicolas Cage's younger brother in Gone in Sixty Seconds) who considers Blanchett as his only friend in the entire town. Holmes was the sultry and adulterous (although she and Kinnear's character weren't even married) Jessica King, who ends up dead an hour and a half into the movie. Keanu Reeves was, for the first time. the badass, wife beater, and Hilary Swank, despite her future Million Dollar Baby role, ended up as the punching bag this time around.
The only problem was that this film tended to be dragging in some scenes, but if you want deep and convincing acting, side by side with a bit of mystery and suspense (with a surprise revelation at the end), this film is for you.
The Gift, is a good movie and very under-rated. Cate Blanchett stars as a single mother making some extra money telling fortunes. She helps in the disappearance of a young woman and finds herself getting deeper and deeper involved in the hunt. The Gift has a great cast including Hilary Swank, Greg Kinnear, Keanu Reeves and Giovanni Ribisi.
What i saw of this was alright (The DVD broke about half way through). Ddin't really pull me in and make me want to find out what happened.
I liked that Keanu Reeves was in it! I like him! Even if he is a seriously big dick in the film!
LOVE Cate Blanchett, LOVE her. This was a fantastic movie. A Sam Raimi classic. You never see it coming. A must see.
I know I saw this, but I swear I don't remember what happened. I can't even remember if I saw the ending. I might try and watch it again sometime.
In the bayous near Savannah lives Annie, a widow with three young sons and a gift: she's clairvoyant, supporting her family by reading cards. Not long after she's menaced by Donnie Barksdale, the abusive husband of a client, the sultry daughter of a prominent citizen (and fiancée of the school principal) goes missing. Annie leads the police to the woman's watery grave, Donnie's pond. At the trial and after, Annie must sort through an attack on her credibility and her gift, knowledge of the dead woman's affairs, her own attraction to the principal, and a separate crisis brought on by the mental illness of one of her neighbors. Blanchett is exceptional in her role as Annie. Annie is seeped in softness, though she's grown hard without the love of her husband. Who knew that Keanu Reeves could play such a chilling character so well? I was genuinely blown away by his stunning portrayal of every woman's worst nightmare. His grizzled beard and jaded speech are indications of how ignorant and violent he is long before we see his actions up close. The rest of the supporting cast is excellent, featuring fine performances by Katie Holmes, Oscar winner Hilary Swank and especially Greg Kinnear. Kinnear has proven that he's very apt at comedy. In The Gift he shows that he can be equally as powerful in a dramatic role. Finally, there is Giovanni Ribisi as the erratic auto mechanic Buddy Cole. Ribisi proves with this one role that he is one of the best actors of his generation. Buddy's character is so complex that he might have fallen flat in another actor's shoes. Ribisi pulls out all the stops with his portrayal of the pushed-to-the-edge Buddy, though never loses the audience's sympathies.
An excellent thriller movie that stars Cate Blanchett (one of many actresses I have a crush on). She is wonderful and the plot is very compelling. I strongly recommend seeing this film...
Not a great movie, but interesting enough in that it's about the supernatural. Kind of a cheesy ending, though.
Perfect performances, especially by Keanu Reeves and Giovanni Ribisi. A thriller that knows it's limits and doesn't dross them.
This Movie Proves That Sam Raimi Is Brilliant Director ( If Spidey Movies Werent Good Enough For You!) ... Perfect Cast ... Very Good Script Thanks To Billy Bob And Blanchett & Reeves & Holmes Brilliant Performances .... It's A GREAT MOVIE
Twisting & suspense movie... me shocked by Katie holmes' role...but she's a good actress, one of my fav...
An amazing thriller about a woman with premonitions who is asked to help and solve a murder. Really keeps you begging for more and the cast is exceptional. Cate is great!
I love this movie! Someone bought it for my stepmom, she never touched it, and left it on teh shelf when she moved out. I watched it, and fell in love!!
I don't usually like these type of movies, but this one I did. Giovanni Ribisi's performance was fantastic!
Excellent thriller with a great cast. There's a young woman found dead but who murdered her? The movie reveals she had a double life. Cate is brilliant as the medium who sees and helps people but comes under scrutiny.
A stinkeroo from the usually reliable Raimi. From the awful characters to the stupid story and the most obvious plot twist in the world, there's barely anything worth liking in this one. And yet it's still better than For Love of the Game.
A who-dunnit spiced up by a psychic Cate Blanchett who solves a murder. An A cast; perhaps a bit too long movie.
Some parts were very confusing. You were convinced someone did it, but it was done by someone else. Very good suspense!
Understated film with amazing performances... everyone in this film was just so great. It was a pretty mainstream effort from Raimi, but at least it proves he's multidimensional.
A Sam Raimi spectacle, starring Blanchett and Swank who are both brilliant, and Giovanni Ribisi who is quite possibly the greatest actor alive. Holmes and Reeves are shit, but they play horrible characters who suffer, so it's all justified. Although the plot isn't mind-warpingly complex, there's still enough substance to hold attention through to the end, and god I LOVE it when films go my way. The psychic stuff is awesome, although I have to say Ribisi is the one with the real gift :). I can understand the point of view of anti-fans, but it worked well for me...
this film gets a whole extra star for katie holmes's bloated corpse being pulled out of a lake on a hook - (Katie please leave acting)
The cast in this movie did amazing acting jobs. I once thought Keanu Reeves could only play a Bill type of character well, but he pulls off a drunken wife beater just fine. Cate Blanchett is wonderful, as well as Giovani Ribisi. Normally a thriller is only good one time, but this probably has some replay value due to its performances.
