This movie was completely messed. I was rather laughing because it was hilarious or laughing at the insanity of this film. Completely insane.
I still don't really know what to make of this movie....I mean it's about killer plants, for what it was I guess it was alright, but plants just aren't scarry.
the book was really good, but the movie didn't really capture the theme very well.
i don't recommend this to horror fanatics (like me)
Bad acting & i just didn't like what the "villian" (for lack of a better word) was. I do not recommend this movie to anyone.
The Ruins is a refinement of the detestable The Hills Have Eyes remake, in that it is not particularly scary except by sheer force of gruesome image. This is the kind of movie that you cringe at while watching, which is further amplified by acting that doesn't totally suck. The main doctor guy is bad but he doesn't really have much to do - characters with long, elaborate death scenes go through the motions with surprising vigor. There was definitely some talent attached to this project.
Meh, more later, it's 1 in the morning
I could just about enjoy this right up until he talking plants popped up.....Not a 'bad' movie by any means and pretty gory in parts but Vincent price did the scarey plant movie so much better almost forty years ago.
I did like this movie. Besides all the gore, and believe me there is plenty of it (ewwww), there is a human story underneath. How quickly life can change. Finding out who your real friends are during a crisis. It was good in that respect.
oh my how badly did this movie suck it was just awful, the one saving thing which got it the stars was the way the group turned on each other while stranded on top of the ruin
i would give this a miss unless you cant sleep and need something to get you to dreamland lol
Seen this movie in theaters when it came out because there was nothing else in theaters (except Prom Night, which was horrible) and I didn't really know what it was about. If I would have known it was about plants I would have waited for the DvD. It was ok, some pretty graphic stuff, but nothing special.
Though the evil was less scary than I expected, the self-destruction of the group was interesting. Worth seeing.
asdjfksdjflksdf. Omgosh. This movie had me squirming in my seat, ahh! There's lots of messed up needed cutting off of body parts and stuff...I don't really recommend this one lol..It was just ok, but too messed up for me!
was better than what i expected...ALOT better than what i was expected...was alot better than a majority of the crap American horror films have been putting out lately. liked how they showed how naive young people can be when vacationing at a foreign land and it bites em in the ass
Awful, awful, awful. Aside from the gore which was more gross than scary, this movie had no redeeming qualities. No plot and no real action. It makes me question "Can the studios not find anything better to waste their money on?"
Not the best horror film... I prefer The Descent... but somehow it manage to freak me out. The performances take the movie to a higher level (especially the girls).
For a horror film it is not bad, it does have an original story and a quite good one ;) But has almost all the scary movies, it didn't scare me...
Not really scary, but it had gory scenes and it was a different story. Kind of like a different version of The Happening.
A shame!! Total disapointment as I was expecting something better than this childish attempt-it is crap (er pardon me for the language) but it lacks quality and finesse!!
A couple bros and their hoes vacationing in Mexico decide to check out some ancient ruins with some German guy they just met who almost made out with one of the hoes. Then, the get shot at and threatened by Mexicans, then attacked by evil plants on the ruin. Bad, unless you enjoy watching gory surgeries with a hunting knife.
Kicks ass on like, a billion different levels! I've got my Laura Ramsey lookin' nice and gutsy and... yeah, thanks Ben Stiller!
There have been other movies dealing with people-eating plants, but not as gory as this one.The amputation scene is not for the squeamish. The performances by the young cast come together here in a way that's simply effective. The Ruins delivers real scares, good performances, intriguing story & few nicely intense scenes.
This movie was hilarious. The plot was somewhat recycled and the characters themselves left much to be desired, but the demon plant made the movie. It's worth the watch just to see the plant, seriously.
This was pretty good. Thought it would be a different murderous creature or whatever, but in the end it was alright.
Highly enjoyable and to the people who scoff at the actual antagonist of this movie (of which I wont reveal), I think they would be better off watching cop movies and docs since they can't turn off movie disbelief for 90 minutes and have fun with the lil imagination in their brains.
I went in not knowing what it was about really, and I didnt remember the trailer so I went in blind and I think it works best that way. Definite WTF...? moments. I thought it was just a Descent/Turistas clone, but I was WAY off.
The set was gorgeous and all those plants/vines were created by PEOPLE! Not Computers!
I have a genuine beef though - why havent we seen anything more by this Carter Smith guy, but HOSTEL catapulted Eli Roth to stardom ??
Damn Good! At the surface you canthink it is just another horror movie about tourist getiing into trouble but it is more than that. It has a different and creepy story, good performances. thrills and gruesome moments.

the ending wasent crap they had to do it that way to leave the film open to a sequel beaucase if it does more than reasonably ok at the cinema then they will do another beacause there is loads of places they can take the film thank yiou
**Possible Spoilers if you havent seen it yet**
To anyone wondering about the "sacrifice": There was no sacrifice. The tourists thought at one point they were being sacrificed, but as they explained later, the villagers were only forced them to stay there and die becuase they figured once they touched the plants, they were "contaminated" and didn't want it to spread. They want to keep it contained. That's why they mentioned how they salted the earth so the plants couldn't grow out farther, and even animals and birds learned not to go there. The villagers were not evil villains, they were simply protecting themselves and the rest of the jungle.
p.s. the only problem I have is with the ending - very quick and anti-climactic
Anyone who thinks this was boring isn't looking for a scary movie, they just want gore. It's nice to see a horror flick that doesn't rely on cheap scares or over-the-top gore and kills. The Ruins instead opts for a much more effective slowly growing sense of fear and dread. I'll take something like this over the entire Saw and Hostel series any day.
And ya gotta give it credit for not watering down for a PG13 like so many lame horror flicks these days.
The film delivers several creepy & gory moments that are very effective besides some great performances by the cast. What i didn't get was a good explanation related to the sacrifice & a ending that was totally a disappointment but other that,it was a enjoyable & gruesome horror film.
