MCT:September 4, 2008Couldn't even sit through this whole movie, only got about halfway. What I did watch extremely boring and quite stupid.

MCT:August 3, 2008It is a good indie film, but i was finding it it hard to find a sense of storyline. It is a very dull movie with very few comedic moments and even they weren't laugh out loud funny.
I guess I went into this film under false pretenses because in the video store this was classed under comedy when it is obviously a drama.
Lou Pucci was great as the main character Justin and so was Vincent D'onofrio as his father. But other performances were lacking especially Vince Vaughn and Keanu Reeves who seemed to be totally out place as Justins dentist. -

I know the title doesn't sound that interesting but its a great movie, the score is also great beautiful done it by The Polyphonic Spree!
Lou Taylor Pucci totally rocks Justin 's role, a hell of a performance...
The movie is kinda different from the book but I found the book damn much better than the movie...

Interesting premise--I'm not too sure about how this movie handled the subject of ADHD meds, however. The central family members (Pucci, D'Onofrio, Swinton) are well-drawn indeed, but Benjamin Bratt has a cameo that basically steals the movie.

MCT:July 16, 2008i was expecting great things (i adore mike mills' pv's), but was pretty disappointed. the film seemed to barely drag along until its sluggish ending. i think d'onofrio and swinton were enjoyable, but found reeves, pucci and garner to be quite loathsome. skip this, read the novel instead.

MCT:March 14, 2008Many independent films explore themes like self-worth and insecurity, and send its characters on journeys to find themselves; but rarely are they done as beautifully and effectively as Thumbsucker.
I don't know if it's because of Mena Suvari look-alike Kelli Garner, or the mid-life crisis of the matriarch... but this film feels like American Beauty to me. And in my opinion, is written just as well if not better.
Every character in this film has his or her problems with insecurity, and each experiences some degree of growth throughout the film, but yet, the film doesn't feel cluttered by it at all. At first, the randomness of its eccentric characters will amuse you, but as the movie unfolds, so do the characters, and you come to understand them all. There isn't much in the way of narrative plot; the characters are the centerpiece of this film.
A lot of this is attributed to the subtle yet powerful acting. Lou Pucci is certainly deserving of the accolades afforded him. Every single member of the supporting cast is great as well; especially Vincent D'Onofrio. Also, Benjamin Bratt makes the best of his 5 minutes on-screen.
Well-written, acted, shot and scored, Thumbsucker is an candid look at insecurity and self-exploration, and is a must see for anyone intrigued by human behavior and character. -
MCT:March 13, 2008The only character i liked in this movie was the dentist,sigh........i wish Keanu Reeves was my dentist......sigh. Also i didnt see the big deal in the boy sucking his thumb,i thought his dad was really over the top.

An entertaining movie, with some great humorous segments. Keanu Reeves was cast in one of the few roles he is suited for. The movie had a touch of the absurb, with weird trippy dream sequences and insane plot points. It was a typcial Indie film, but lacked that extra something I've come to expect from these films. What exactly I couldn't say; it just didn't have it.

A Sundance Film about gowing up and how the process never ends, i felt the massege was something like this: we don't know what our purpose is in life so if we just do what feel right it will either pan out or it won't the important thing is that it felt righ in our mind and that is something one can live and die with

Benefits from the unique vibe instilled by the soundtrack (Polyphonic Spree!) and some good performances (Keanu, haha). Not as funny as I'd expected but still an interesting, believable meandering through adolescence. It gets a bit surreal but handles it swimmingly, but still doesn't make too convincing an impression.

Interesting. One thing that suprised me about the content of the film, was that they focused more on ADD then the thumbsucking issue. Both have been adressed within my family, so it had my interest at least. Overall, great film. It shows that people don't know what is truly normal.

A confused teenage life transfered to the big screen. Some odd character changes aren't convincingly covered. Perhaps some things are just better left for your personal diary at home, not the movie screen.

Mills doesn't really have the skill to direct a visually compelling feature, but the story works regardless. Fine acting saves it.
